International schools operate under unique contexts and require exceptional governance. Join the journey…
TBD
07:00- 9:00am EST
Facilitated by: Chip Barder and Bambi Betts
Are board elections on the horizon?
Hundreds if not thousands of international school governance structures include elected members. How do we get the best people on the board to do its important work? Are there strategies that can help us leverage our elected- member structure and avoid the common pitfalls?
We say- a resounding YES! And participating in this module will provide these insights and strategies to get the “board we need.”
Any of these dilemmas resonate?
Board candidates who have an agenda such as adding a program, lowering tuition, getting rid of a teacher, etc.
Board candidates who want to join the board to represent a particular constituency such as a cultural or national group or a sector in the community (commercial, diplomatic, host country, etc.).
High turnover on the board each year because of the transient population which can lead to an insufficient pool of good candidates, loss of institutional knowledge, lack of a consistent direction and vision as new people come on the board and want to change things, etc.
Stringent legal or constitutional requirements that seem to get in the way of having the most skilled people wind up on the board.
Then come and join us!
What will I learn?
We will explore:
How do we get the kind of people that a board needs for best governance when they are elected by the parents?
How do we facilitate stability on the board when the community and thus board membership is very transient?
How do we manage and mitigate the restrictions imposed by legal entities which can appear to impair board effectiveness?
