International School Governance Matters

14 - 16 March 2025
Panama City, Panama

14 March 2025: One-day seminar for current and aspiring board chairs, and school heads

15 - 16 March 2025: Two-day seminar for all governance members, including owners and heads

Who is it for?

The program is designed for new and returning international school governance members, owners and heads. The training addresses governing structures of all types including parent associations, family-owned, corporate-owned, host country government-linked and any other structure.

What will we learn during the 2-day seminar?

Through case studies, interactive exercises, mini-presentations and application tasks we will explore:

How does international school governance:

✔ Govern amidst conflicting beliefs about board and head roles and responsibilities?
✔ Develop, implement and monitor STRATEGIC policy that sets direction for the school?
✔ Establish and monitor the value proposition the school offers?
✔ Grapple with and make decisions about critical issues such as equity and diversity in staffing
and curriculum, the role of artificial intelligence in our schools,
etc.?
✔ Work effectively with, promote the growth of, and evaluate the head of school?
✔ Authentically measure and safeguard the mission, not just give it lip service?
✔ Ensure each member has the essential skills and dispositions to contribute to decision-making?
✔ Maintain skilled governance members in a transient context?

What does the board need to know and understand about:

✔ The evolving forms of international school governance and the impact on schools around the world?
✔ The most recent research on learning that will impact curriculum and staffing?

What will we learn during the Board Chair Session?

Wide experience confirms that:

✔ The role of the board chair is critical to the effectiveness of the board
✔ The position can be very isolating
✔ There are few opportunities for peer interaction/exchange of ideas with other board chairs.
✔ Managing volunteers can be harder than managing employees

The focus of the day will be centered around roles and responsibilities related to these two questions:

✔ How do I as Board Chair ensure that we get the most out of our time together as a Board?
✔ When not in meetings, what are the norms and resources and how do I as a Board Chair manage
and leverage them?

The program also includes time for individual participants to use the group as a sounding board for issues and challenges they are facing. We hope that a network of Board Chairs will grow out of this day so participants can be a resource to others during the school.
